Streamline Your Differential Extraction Workflow
Forensic labs require efficiency and precision, especially when handling complex samples from sexual assault cases. Manual methods for differential extraction are time-consuming, and their performance can vary depending on the individual analyst.
The Maxwell® DE System enables medium- and high-throughput separation of sperm DNA from casework samples with mixed cell types and eliminates the need for purification when quantification and STR-analysis are performed with PowerQuant® and PowerPlex® Systems. Automation provides consistent and reproducible results for forensic casework analysts who need to efficiently process sexual assault samples to reduce their lab’s SAEK backlog.
Promega forensic products are manufactured in alignment with the ISO 18385 standard. This standard ensures minimal risk of human DNA contamination for products used to collect, store and analyze biological materials for forensic purposes. Learn more.
Reduce Hands-On Time
In today’s high-throughput lab environments, time is one of the most valuable—and limited—resources. The Maxwell® DE System significantly reduces hands-on time compared to manual nucleic acid extraction, freeing up staff to focus on critical tasks like data analysis, troubleshooting and reporting. Less pipetting means fewer errors, improved consistency and greater reproducibility—without sacrificing yield or quality. For labs juggling limited staff or scaling up sample volumes, that translates into operational efficiency and a lot less tedium at the bench.
Save Resources with Direct Compatibility
The DNA obtained using the Maxwell® DE System can be subsequently quantified using the PowerQuant® System and amplified using the PowerPlex® STR multiplex of your choice.
- Non-sperm fraction: Purification maximizes compatibility with downstream workflows, with an option to shorten the process.
- Sperm fraction: Ready for direct quantification and amplification; purify if needed based on sample quality.
The Maxwell® DE System includes all components necessary for differential extraction.
Profiles from Fractions Obtained with the Maxwell® DE System
Non-Sperm Fraction
Sperm Fraction
Profiles obtained from the non-sperm (left) and sperm (right) fractions of the same sample collected 24 hours post-coitus. Fractions were obtained using the Maxwell® DE System and amplified using the PowerPlex® 35GY System. The concentration of autosomal DNA detected in the non-sperm fraction with the PowerQuant® System was 55.2ng/µl. The [Auto]/[Deg] ratio for the non-sperm fraction was 2.8. The concentration of autosomal DNA detected in the sperm fraction with the PowerQuant® System was 0.85ng/µl. The [Auto]/[Y] ratio for the sperm fraction was 1.0, and the [Auto]/[Deg] ratio was 1.6.
Maxwell® Instruments Make Forensic Labs More Efficient
Automated DNA extraction saves laboratories time and labor costs and frees staff to work on casework analysis. Capable of processing up to 16 or 48 samples per run, depending on which instrument is being used, Maxwell® Instruments and Kits meet the varying throughput demands of forensic laboratories. With less manual pipetting, you not only cut down on human error but also boost consistency and reproducibility. Maxwell® Instruments don't just save time—they help labs do more with the resources they already have.
