An Innovative System for Improving DNA Isolation from Diverse Plant Species

Dr. Jackson Moeller is currently a Research Specialist/Lab Manager in the Kimple Lab at the University of Wisconsin (UW), Department of Medicine. Prior to this position he was a Research Specialist in the UW Botany Department where he studied the effects of climate change on native plant populations using next generation sequencing. He holds a Ph.D. in Plant Biology and Plant Pathology from Iowa State University and received his B.S. in Microbiology from South Dakota State University. He is a distinguished author and you can find more details on the study he will present in this webinar in the published article “Paramagnetic Cellulose DNA Isolation Improves DNA Yield and Quality Among Diverse Plant Taxa” in the journal  Applications in Plant Sciences.

Chris received his MBA from Texas State University and his Bachelor of Science in Microbiology from Texas A&M University. In April 2013 he joined Promega as a Global Product Manager for nucleic acid purification and is responsible for managing the Maxwell® purification instruments.

They will introduce a new automated chemistry for the extraction of gDNA from plants that overcome the hassles of manual purification while dramatically increasing yields and purity.

The extraction of genomic DNA from plants often involves tedious manual methods that produce suboptimal gDNA yields and purity. To overcome these challenges, we developed a new automated chemistry for the purification of gDNA from plant tissues that is run on the Maxwell® 16 Instrument. This webinar will start with an overview of the Maxwell® 16 Instrument and the new Maxwell® 16 LEV Plant DNA Kit. Next, Dr. Jackson Moeller from the University of Wisconsin will present a summary of his recently published work demonstrating the performance advantages of this system compared to commonly used methods using a wide variety of plant species representing 21 families and 15 orders.
