The Right Automated Solution for Cannabis DNA Purification

Cannabis leaf, bud, flower, meristem, and callus tissue was taken from young plants.  Cannabis DNA was purified from 1, 5, 10 or 30mg of plant tissue using the Maxwell Purefood GMO kit.  Yield was determine using DNA dye-based quantitation with data shown from leaf and bud tissue.

Do you need to make quick decisions on food safety and contamination?

The Maxwell® RSC PureFood Pathogen Kit offers a simple, automated extraction protocol to obtain high-quality pathogen DNA from a variety of food samples in as little as 40 min. Combine this DNA extraction with our qPCR analysis for reliable results in a fast, simple workflow.
-Automate extraction through simple protocol with fewer steps
-Isolate DNA from samples with little material
-No enzymatic pre-treatment needed

Figure 1. Detection of Aspergillus in food samples.

1 and 10 colony forming units (CFU) Aspergillus brasiliensis per gram of food were spiked into gummy and brownie samples and cultured for 24 and 48 hours. DNA was isolated and detected as described. Because the primer set used was not species specific, background Aspergillus spp. DNA was detected in both the sample types.

We can help with identifying the gender of a cannabis plant.

Understanding Gender is Key

Knowing how to quickly determine plant gender, also referred to as “sexing”, is a vital technique to manage growth. Many observational methods exist to determine plant gender phenotype, but they require experience and are not 100% accurate. The identification of male vs female genetic marker in cannabis DNA has allowed development of DNA genotyping methods that can determine plant sex earlier than when a phenotype is evident and that are extremely accurate.

By assuring sexing early on, growers and breeders can optimize female plant selection and achieve maximum yield and quality. As more cannabis genome information becomes available, DNA genotyping can also be used for marker assisted breeding or trait selection like conventional agricultural crops.

Use DNA Technology to Understand Strain and Pathogen Identification

There are significant differences between strains of cannabis that are increasingly leading to differences in value as well as traditional measure such as how a user feels when consuming the product. The other aspect of cannabis use is safety where consumers want to know that the products are safe from mold and other food borne pathogens.

Both strain identification and pathogen identification can be accomplished using DNA technology that has been widely used in research, clinical and forensic applications. DNA technology is broken down into DNA extraction from plants or cannabis products typically followed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays or DNA sequencing to assess or quantitate the DNA markers present in the sample. Modern methodologies can automate these processes making DNA technology simple to operate and with consistent results.

2019 Cannabis Science Conference

September 2-6, 2019
Portland, Oregon

Cannabis Science Conference is the world's largest and most technical cannabis science expo. Our conference pulls together cannabis industry experts, instrument manufacturers, testing labs, research scientists, medical practitioners, policy makers and interested novices. Our semi-annual event is aimed at improving cannabis science. Join us in Portland, Oregon in September, for exciting conferences with keynotes, presentations, round table discussions and exhibits. At our inaugural event we hosted over 750 attendees from all over the world! Our second event hosted over 2,000 attendees from over 24 countries and we hosted over 3,000 attendees at our third conference in August of 2018.
