The Young Life Scientists’ Symposium
Neurological disorders: from molecules to medicine
Incorporating the Promega UK Young Life Scientist Awards

Held at the Bristol Council House on Thursday the 14th
of May this one day symposia for young life scientist
researchers presented a perfect opportunity for young
researchers to come together to discuss, present and show case
their work.
The programme for the day, organised by the YLS committee,
Siobhan Dennis, Nadia Cerminara, Claire Durant and Paul Farrow,
was designed to attract young life scientists in the early
stages of their career. Attractions including key note
presentations from industry professionals, career workshops and
talks and presentations from fellow Neuroscientists, drew in
over 100 delegates making the symposia a real hit with young
researchers.
Highlights from the day included a “Life after the Lab: Do
transferable skills really exist?” presented by Andrew Impey a
Science Entrepreneur and a talk from Peter Reinhart, of Wyeth
Research, who flew all the way from New Jersey , USA to present
“Challenges and opportunities in AD drug discovery research –
from benchside to bedside”.
Talks from young life scientists ran throughout the day and
include topics such as “Neurodegeneration to neuroprotection”
and a series of discussions on “Neurological disorders”.
The symposium also featured the Promega UK Young Life Scientist
Awards and our 6 finalists were invited to the day to present
their research to a panel of external judges and fellow
researchers. The Promega awards provided delegates an
opportunity to listen to research topics from other life science
disciplines, which captivated the audience and the external
panel of judges, who all commented on the outstanding standard
of work from his year’s entrants.
Promega's highlight of the day, was to announce the winners and
to welcome Professor Clive Orchard, President of the
Physiological Society and Dean of the Faculty of Medical and
Veterinary Sciences ay Bristol University, who presented the
placed winners with their trophy’s and prizes.

The day ended with a drinks reception for all delegates who
attended and the Promega 6 finalists, a fantastic symposium
which presented Promega with a perfect platform to continue our
support of young life scientists in the UK.
