Coordinate Mediators of Early Inflammatory Events

A successful host response to infection generally requires the accumulation of
immune cells at the site of tissue damage. This cellular accumulation is a critical step
in the normal inflammatory process and requires the migration and attachment of
specialized inflammatory cells to blood vessels surrounding the site. Here we review a
newly recognized superfamily of chemoattractant cytokines, the chemokines, which play an
important regulatory role in these early events of inflammation.
