The Michigan State Police DNA Laboratory has experienced an increase in criminal paternity, identification of human remains and relative association cases over the past year. Routinely, these cases will involve known reference standards, products of conception and degraded remains. These cases often test the limitations of the analytical systems in place at our laboratory. Chemiluminescent based RFLP technology is routinely employed. Recently, with ongoing validation of STR based systems, adjudicated cases of this type were re-evaluated using the STR based systems.
Several interesting cases will be presented, with both the original RFLP data and new STR data.
