A designed interlaboratory comparison of DNA typing using multiplexed Short Tandem
Repeat (STR) loci was conceived during the Technical Working Group for DNA Analysis
Methods (TWGDAM) 1995 Summer meeting. The objectives of the comparison study were
announced at the TWGDAM Open Meeting preceding the October 1995 Sixth International
Symposium on Human Identification. Seven different samples were prepared at the
National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and distributed to 41 laboratories
that had confirmed interest by October 31, 1995. Most participants evaluated the
"CTT" triplex, composed of STRs CSF1PO (GenBank locus HUMCSF1PO), TPOX (HUMTPOX)
and TH01 (HUMTH01). A few participants evaluated the quadruplex "CTTv"
consisting of the CTT triplex STRs plus vWA (HUMVWFA31).
