We are currently utilizing STR loci to perform paternity and other identification analyses. These loci as a group are less polymorphic than RFLP loci that are typically used for the same purposes. However, STR loci have distinct advantages which counterbalance this deficiency. The most important advantages are the small sample requirement, speed of the typing operation, and ease of analysis. I will present a detailed analysis of the comparative powers of different systems and our assessment of the technical properties of various systems presently available and those that can be developed. The analysis will conclude with a presentation and comparative evaluation of various STR batteries which are valuable for paternity and forensic testing.
