In early May the employees of Promega put down their pens and pipettors for a day to engage in the first ever Promega Science Day at corporate headquarters in Madison, Wisconsin. Getting to Promega.

Activities included talks by company scientists, a scientific advisory board member and President/CEO William A. Linton. Scientific posters and demonstrations in the on-site labs interspersed throughout the day encouraged interactivity and cross-departmental discussions.

Bill Linton kicked off Promega's Science Day by prefacing the talks with a quick look at the company's 20+ year history and a vision of where Promega is headed, continuing to grow and develop new and better products and services for its international clientele. Linton introduced  Science Day coordinator, Jeff Kelly, Protein Expression Group R&D Leader. Jeff next gave a pep talk to a relatively enthusiastic crowd (it was a Monday morning after all) ready to learn what their colleagues---whether neighbors in adjoining cubicles or lab mates down the hall---are working on.

The Promega campus consists of multiple buildings spread over a 50+-acre area that includes natural prairie grass, hiking/cross-country ski trails and multiple wooded areas. Operational facilities include corporate headquarters, the BioPharmaceutical Technology Center (BTC),  The Faraday Center, as well as the Guest House and the Earth House.

Morning talks ranged from recent developments of the READIT™ DNA interrogation technology, presented by Dan Kephart, Scientific Applications Leader, to how Promega has earned and maintains its strong customer loyalty through extensive technical support of the global Technical Services Department, by Pat Burke, Technical Services Leader. Much work of the Scientific Applications Group goes into Promega Notes and eNotes as applications articles (hence readers of Promega Notes and eNotes applications articles will recognize Dan Kephart's name!).

Promega's Technical Services Department offers top-notch technical support for all Promega products as well as general information to support a broad range of research applications. Technical Services hosts the Technical Resources, a resource of protocols, guides, online assistants, calculators and more.

1377crop.gif (49312 bytes) Posters were presented by all research teams, some with multiple presentations throughout the day. Poster discussions focused on new products in development, expansion of existing product lines and efforts at improving current products. Many support labs, such as the oligonucleotide team and the1379crop.gif (61504 bytes) scientific applications group, presented technology demonstrations during the afternoon. Scientists and nonscientists were able to see first hand how their friends and colleagues spent their days at work and exactly how they contributed to the overall success of Promega.
