Lecture and Laboratory Units
Unit 1: The Relationship between Genes and Proteins
This unit includes a lecture on the basic concepts of transcription and translation. The accompanying laboratory gives students the opportunity to explore transcription and translation "in vivo" and "in vitro". Downloadable animations of transcription and translation are also provided.
Download teaching resources hereUnit 2: The Chemistry of Inheritance
This unit provides basic information on DNA replication and PCR. The accompanying laboratory "Detecting HFE Mutations in Human Genomic DNA" gives students the opportunity to apply the theory to a practical lab exercise. The Instructor's Guide includes a bioethics case study about genetic testing research.
Download teaching resources hereUnit 3: Detecting Microbial Contamination
This unit presents ATP-based and culture-based methods for detecting microbes. The lecture includes a discussion of MRSA, and the Instructor's Guide presents a case study dealing with control of emerging infectious disease.
Download teaching resources hereUnit 4: Genomic DNA Purification
This unit presents DNA purification from a chemistry perspective: What does each step in the protocol do? The laboratory includes solution-based and membrane-based purification experiments.
Download teaching resources hereUnit 5: Solving a Crime Using DNA Analysis
This unit presents information about forensic science, with an emphasis on DNA analysis. Instructors can choose from an RFLP-analysis of crime scene "evidence" or a more advanced STR analysis. The accompanying lecture can be modified easily for the level of the students, and the instructor's guide provides a bioethics case study and other interdisciplinary activities.
