In-vitro or cell-free protein expression systems provide a very quick and easy route into the study of protein function/activity. They are the perfect tool if you are looking to move from your genomics studies to begin to investigate aspects of gene product function. The biological research focus is now moving toward a systematic characterization of genes and their encoded proteins from the perspective of their expression and function in the cellular context (proteomics).

In-vitro expression technologies offer significant time savings over cellular approaches and are generally quite easy to perform. They are mostly based on cell-free translation of specific RNA transcripts and on coupled transcription and translation systems (TNT Systems) - which allow researchers to rapidly express proteins directly from DNA. The use of these rapid in-vitro expression systems can be applied to many different applications enabling efficient elucidation of a protein’s characteristics.

This webinar will provide an introduction to in-vitro/cell-free protein expression, discuss how the systems have developed, and highlight the advantages that can be gained from their use. We will review various applications for which they are often used, and also give some guidance as to why you may select one type of system over another.
